A New York man has been charged with the murder of a one-year-old as part of a sweeping 63-count indictment against 18 alleged gang members.

His alleged gunshots wounded three people and killed 22-month-old Davell Gardner, who had been sitting in a stroller at the time.

All of the four were described by the Brooklyn District Attorney as “innocent bystanders”.

“Insidious gang violence as we allege in this case has taken and traumatised far too many lives, including many innocents such as Davell Gardner – a bright and loved baby boy with his whole life ahead of him,” district attorney Eric Gonzalez said.

Austin has also been charged with murdering an alleged gang rival at a nightclub three months earlier.

Austin and 17 other men charged are alleged to be members of the Hoolies street gang.

The indictment states the gang sought to “establish and maintain geographic control and dominance over their territory through acts of violence”.

The indictment notes that Austin is also known as “Capo”, “Hot Wheels” or “Doodoo”.

Austin’s driver Akeem Artis has also been charged with murder in the second degree over his alleged role in the shooting.

The gang allegedly described their various crimes on a group chat on the app Telegram.
