For the first few years of their marriage, Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh lived in Malta for his naval career. In 1949, Philip was posted as the first lieutenant of the destroyer HMS Chequers. The following year he was promoted to lieutenant commander. However, his naval career was unexpectedly cut short due to King George VI’s declining health. In February 1952, he passed away, and Elizabeth became Queen, making Philip the Queen’s consort.
