The icy weather sweeping across Australia’s southeast has broken records this morning, with some cities experiencing the chilliest run of days in years.

Sydneysiders woke up to another day with the mercury below 9C, making it the longest stretch of cold days in May in decades.

“It will be the city’s coldest run of May nights in 54 years and the coldest run of nights this early in the year in 66 years – cooling to 9C or lower on five consecutive nights,” a Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson told 9News.

“So far, this has been Sydney’s coldest run of nights this early in the year and for May – in 10 years – cooling to 9C or lower on four consecutive nights.”

Sydney temperatures dropped to 8.7C at sunrise this morning.

A broad high is behind the frosty conditions in the country’s southeast this week, causing severely cold conditions which have remained dry.

A cold front is also generating rain and gusty winds in Tasmania while a weak trough is causing light showers in WA’s south.

Onshore winds are also likely to direct showers to the coastline along northern NSW and eastern Queensland.
