Climate protesters have been taken into custody after locking themselves to the roof of a truck in the middle of a busy Melbourne CBD intersection.

The pair were calling for climate intervention and action from the roof of the parked rental truck as traffic maneuvered around them.

The protesters were taken into custody after being brought down by search and rescue police about 9.30am.

Flinders Street has been clogged with major traffic delays and a number of tram services have been impacted.

Police were directing the onslaught of traffic in the area.

“Victoria Police is currently responding to protest activity at the intersection of Flinders Street and Swanston Street,” a Victoria Police statement read.

“A truck has been parked in the middle of the intersection causing disruption to trams and vehicle traffic in the area.

“Police are currently directing traffic to ensure vehicles can get through the intersection.”

The men in a live social media video said they had no other choice but to stage the protest.

“Doing nothing risks everything,” they said.

Commuters have been advised to consider alternative routes and to allow for extra time.

Extinction Rebellion protesters are planning to disrupt the city every day next week.
