The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday imposed the arms embargo on Houthis, an Islamist political and armed group of Yemen. The UNSC arms embargo bans all supplies of arms and related material to the country.

The UNSC claimed that several drones and missile assaults took place in Saudi Arabia this year. Subsequently, the council agreed to expand a targeted U.N. arms embargo on several Houthi leaders to the whole group. The resolution seeks to limit the capacity of the Houthis to conduct cross-border attacks in Saudi Arabia by expanding an arms embargo to the entire group.

According to UPI, the council condemned the series of attacks by Houthis that struck civilians in the two nations in the past several weeks. The council labelled the group as a terrorist group for the first time.

It received 11 votes in favour. However, four council members, Ireland, Mexico, Brazil, and Norway abstained. Reportedly, Russia voted in favour after abstaining from the council vote a year ago to renew U.N. sanctions on Yemen.

Saudi-led coalition

A Saudi-led coalition has been fighting the Houthis for seven years in a conflict. It is largely seen as a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The war killed tens of thousands of people and caused a terrible humanitarian crisis.

The coalition, the United States, and U.N. sanctions monitors have accused Iran of supplying the Houthis group with arms, training, and financial support. However, both Iran and the Houthis denied such claims.

According to Reuters, the coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 after the Houthis ousted the government from the country. Reportedly, cross-border attacks have been a regular occurrence since the coalition’s 2015 intervention in Yemen’s civil war. The Houthi militia is a group that has been fighting Yemen’s Sunni-majority government since 2004.
