A well-preserved 1600-year-old mosaic has been unearthed by archaeologists working in the Israeli city of Yavne.
The mosaic, which dates from the Byzantine period (300-400 AD), was found as archaeologists unearthed an extensive industrial zone which operated for several centuries, according to a government press release from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), published on Monday.
“The pavement may have been part of a splendid residential building in a wealthy neighbourhood adjacent to the industrial zone,” according to the statement.
The pavement is multi-coloured and covered in geometric motifs set in a black rectangular frame, added the IAA.
