A man has been charged after allegedly setting a puppy alight in Sydney’s south-west this morning.

Emergency crews were called to a property on Wonga Road, Lurnea after reports a unit was burning just after 3am.

Police and fire crews gained access to the unit and were able to extinguish the blaze, which caused significant damage.

While inspecting the damaged property, officers located a six-month-old puppy locked in a cage on the balcony.

Police allege the puppy was intentionally set alight.

The animal had to be euthanised due to severe burn injuries.

Residents from neighbouring units were evacuated as a precaution, but no other injuries were reported.

A 39-year-old resident of the damaged unit was arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station.

He’s been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and damage property by fire.

The man was refused bail to appear in Liverpool Local Court today.
