A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a six-year-old girl’s body was found in the woods near a quiet suburban US town.
A murder investigation was launched when Grace Ross was found dead in New Carlisle, Indiana, on Friday two hours after she was reported missing from Chapman Street.
St Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Assistant Commander Dave Wells said an autopsy was being performed to determine how the six-year-old girl died.
A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested but his name will not be released.
He is being dealt with through the juvenile justice system.
Neighbours who live in the complex near the woods where the girl was found called the incident “disturbing”.
“Very disturbing, very scary, nowadays with things going on you don’t know what’s going to happen,” neighbour Allie Sadler told CNN affiliate WBND.
“It can happen anywhere, at any time.
“I think it’s been very suddenly quiet around here.”
A candle-lit vigil will be held for Grace tonight at the gazebo in Memorial Park.
The department is not releasing names or additional details at this time, Commissioner Wells said.
Police are asking anyone with information on the case to call the homicide unit as the investigation is active.
