r/MiddleEastNews - Iran nuclear talks resume in Vienna as Tehran shifts stance

The Vienna meeting resumed on Thursday to talk about the Iran nuclear deal. The officials discussed how to restore the 2015 nuclear deal that was suspended earlier. Tehran revised its stance after receiving pressure from Russia and China. Last week, the EU (European Union) and the US (United States) also warned Iran to change its demand. Reportedly, earlier Diplomats said that unless Tehran shifts its stance quickly, after five days of meetings in Vienna, there is little possibility of a successful negotiation. Subsequently, Tehran took the decision to modify its demand at the start of the seventh round of talks on the future of the nuclear deal in Vienna.

Russian ambassador to the talks, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that they managed to eradicate a number of problems and misunderstandings that created tension between them. EU diplomat Enrique Mora said that she is at ease because the agreement finally came back to life. The US has participated indirectly in the ongoing talks because earlier, the US  withdrew from the deal in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump. However, now President Joe Biden said that he wants to join the deal again. Reportedly, the US will send a senior government delegation to the UAE next week.

Nuclear programme in 2015

The United States, China, Russia, Germany, France, and Britain made an agreement in Vienna with Iran on its nuclear programme in 2015. They signed the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) in 2015 to make it impossible for Iran to build an atomic bomb. However, the agreement allowed it to pursue a civilian nuclear programme. The JCPOA is a detailed, 159-page agreement with five annexes reached by Iran and the P5+1 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) on July 14, 2015. Reportedly, Iran has always denied wanting a nuclear arsenal.
