A NSW Police spokeswoman said they were still establishing the details of the accident, amid reports the five animals killed were prized racehorses.

The driver, a 62-year-old man, and a 59-year-old male passenger were treated at the scene by paramedics, before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

All five of the horses that were being transported in the vehicle died as a result of the collision.
